A motion sensor switch is a device that will help you transform your house in a modern “smart hose”. The motion sensor can detect whether there is someone passing by and it will automatically turn on the lights, or whatever it is programmed to do. Although it can have much functionality it is usually used as an automatic light switch.
The motion sensor switch is not a big investment as its price varies from $20 to $100; the outdoor motion sensor switches being usually more expensive than the indoor ones. Also if you are not looking forward to a lot of wirework there are many motion switches that are connected directly to the light bulb and all you have to do is unscrew the light bulb, screw on the motion switch and then the light bulb on top.
Even though some might say it’s not a very useful invention, many people find it very useful for outdoors, for lights in front of the house that let you know that someone is passing by, and for lights is basements, closets and bathrooms, places you might forget to turn off the light, or you might have the hands too busy to turn it on.
But the motion sensor switches are becoming more and more complex. Some are able to detect small movements to up to 20 ft, and large movements to up to 50 ft, and even have vandal resistance. Also, the more complex models can be programmed on when to turn on the light depending on energy saving plans, and daylight availability. They can also be programmed on the time they should turn off the light after the movement was gone.
It is really impressive to see what those little things can do. Actually the technology in the area has developed a lot and you can even choose to get a light bulb (made out of a led) that has a motion sensor in it and is very easy to install and will save you a lot of electricity. This is also a very good way to find out if the motion sensor switches are actually for you and if it is a good option for your house. It is much better than investing in this technology to install it all over your house and then finding out that it’s not actually what you were looking for, or that you could have used it only in some parts of the house.
Although it’s not a very big initial investment you should keep in mind that you might not like the light actually turning on every time you go in a certain room (for example a kid’s bedroom), and the motion sensor switch is more suitable to areas where light is necessary at all times, and will not disturb people in the room. Also, the motion sensor switch is a good investment for offices and hallways of institutions where you might want to save some money on the electricity bill.
